About Email Interests

Updated this week

Email interests are categories of marketing emails. Use email interests to send emails to only interested constituents. Your constituents can subscribe (opt in) to or unsubscribe (opt out) from email interests.

Email interests apply only to your marketing emails. Email interests don’t apply to transaction emails, which are emails with one of these purposes: Acknowledgement, Receipt, or Pledge Reminder. When you create an email with a transaction purpose, you cannot select an email interest.

This article describes how email interests work. If you’re ready to set up email interests, read Create and Manage Email Interests.

What Email Interests Should I Create?

You must create at least one email interest in Bloomerang CRM. Email interests such as Monthly Newsletter and Volunteer Opportunities are common, but every organization is different.

Email interests

Consider carefully how many email interests to create and what to name them. When constituents open your email message and select to manage their preferences, the list of email interests appears. Read about best practices and how to create email interests.

How Do I Use Email Interests?

When you create a marketing email, you select an email interest that describes the content. Bloomerang CRM sends this email to only constituents who are subscribed to that email interest.

Email interests segment your email communication, but they are different from lists in Constant Contact or MailChimp. For example, to email your board members in Bloomerang CRM, in the email template:

  • Select relevant email interests

  • Include the Board Member group in your email filters, which is one of the groups that Bloomerang CRM automatically creates for you

Board members who are subscribed to the selected email interests receive your email.

How Do Constituents Subscribe or Unsubscribe from Emails?

As a best practice, let constituents manage their own email subscriptions. Read more about this.

Your organization can also manage email preferences and restrictions for constituents. Read more about this.
