Bloomerang CRM Mobile App | What is Tap to Pay?

Updated over a week ago

Process in-person donations instantly and securely with Tap to Pay.

With Tap to Pay, your mobile device is the payment terminal. To make a payment, donors tap their contactless card or mobile device to your mobile device screen.

At events, you can process donations quickly because:

  • Donors keep their card or device in hand and don’t have to touch a screen or pin pad.

  • You don’t have to swipe or insert cards in a card reader, or manually enter card numbers.

  • You can use Tap to Pay on multiple phones at the same time.

Tap to Pay is available exclusively for customers who use Bloomerang Payments. On compatible devices, you can use Tap to Pay immediately after a simple setup.

How It Works

Start a new donation in the mobile app. Enter the amount and select the payment method, fund, and optional settings.

If the donor has a digital wallet, ask the donor to activate it. iPhone users double-press the lock button on their phone to activate Apple Pay. Android users turn on their screen and unlock their phone to pay with Google Pay.

To complete the donation, ask the donor to tap their card or mobile device against your phone screen. The donation processes instantly and appears on the constituent’s profile on the mobile app and web application.

Security

Tap to Pay is the most secure way to process donations.

When a donor taps a physical card to pay, the card number remains private–it never appears on the screen and is not transmitted to Bloomerang CRM.

When a donor taps an iPhone or Android phone to pay with a digital wallet, they take advantage of digital wallet security. Digital wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay use a single-use token rather than the card number.

Your staff and volunteers can use personal iPhone and Android phones to securely process donations. Card information is never stored on the device used to process payments.

Requirements to Process Payments

To use Tap to Pay, you must use Bloomerang Payments as your payment processor. To process Tap to Pay payments, you must use a device that meets a few requirements.

iPhones must meet these requirements:

  • Model: Apple iPhone XS or newer. These models have a built-in NFC receiver. NFC uses radio waves to transmit information only over a very limited distance (just a few centimeters). Find the Model Number of Your iPhone.

  • Software: iOS 18.0.1. Beta versions don’t support Tap to Pay. You and your users should upgrade to the latest version of iOS for the best performance. Find the Software Version on Your iPhone.

Android phones must:

  • Run Android 11 or newer.

  • Use Google Mobile Services.

  • Have the Google Play Store app installed.

  • Have a stable connection to the internet.

  • Have a functioning NFC antenna and chipset.

  • Not be rooted and have a device bootloader that is locked and unchanged.

  • Have a hardware backed keystore.

  • Support generating key pairs using a variety of key algorithms, including RSA and AES from the Android keystore.

You can use Tap to Pay on as many iPhones and Android phones as you need. For example, at a busy event, your organization might use multiple devices to process donations.

Note: You cannot use iPads to process Tap to Pay payments.

Requirements to Make Payments

To make a payment, donors can use these payment methods:

  • Contactless card — A debit or credit card with NFC. Look for the contactless indicator Contactless radio wave icon on the card.

  • Digital wallet — An iPhone with Apple Pay enabled, or an Android phone with Google Pay enabled.

For donors without a contactless card or digital wallet, you can always use a different method to process payments.

Enable Tap to Pay

When you log in to the Bloomerang CRM mobile app, Tap to Pay enables automatically if you use Bloomerang Payments and have a compatible iPhone or Android phone.

If Tap to Pay fails to enable automatically, you can always manually enable it. For information about how to manually enable this feature, view Manually Enable Tap to Pay.
