About Channels and Purposes

Updated over 2 months ago

Channels and purposes indicate how and why an action was done. You can assign channels and purposes to interactions, tasks, emails, and letters. Choose the channel or purpose that most closely matches your task.

The engagement level calculation considers channels and purposes, which means you can't edit or create new channels and purposes. You can add custom fields to interactions.

Channels

Channel describes how the task is being done:

  • Email — One-time or personal emails

  • In Person — Face-to-face meetings, including events and volunteer activity

  • Mail — Physical mail

  • Mass Email — One email sent to many constituents

  • Phone — Phone calls

  • Social Media — Social media posts

  • Text Message — Text messages via mobile devices

  • Video Call — Calls with smaller groups

  • Webinar — Larger online presentations

  • Website — Through your organization's website

  • Other — If no other options are a good fit

Purposes

Purpose describes the primary intent of the task:

  • Acknowledgement — To thank a constituent for single donations. This Purpose option changes the Acknowledged flag on a transaction from No to Yes.

  • Impact/Cultivation — To tell a constituent how their donations or efforts are helping, and to cultivate relationships with constituents

  • Newsletter — To update constituents on recent organizational news

  • Pledge Reminder — To remind a constituent of a monetary promise

  • Receipt — For donation receipts. You can use this option for year-end tax purposes. This option doesn't change the acknowledged flag on a transaction.

  • Solicitation — To ask the constituent for a donation

  • Special Event — For all event-related activities

  • Volunteer Activity — For all volunteer-related activities

  • Welcome — To welcome a new donor or an existing donor who has signed up to be a recurring donor

  • Other — If no other options are a good fit

Constituents can’t unsubscribe from transaction emails, which are emails with one of these purposes: Acknowledgement, Receipt, or Pledge Reminder.
