Donation Forms | About DAFpay

Accept gifts from donor-advised funds without asking donors to leave your donation form. DAFpay is a payment method, powered by Chariot, that lets a donor with a donor-advised fund (DAF) recommend a grant to your organization directly from your donation form in Bloomerang Fundraising (formerly Qgiv by Bloomerang). The gift is recorded in Bloomerang Fundraising right away, and the grant arrives later from the donor's DAF sponsor.

For example, a donor who gives through the Smith Family Charitable Fund selects DAFpay on your form, signs in to their fund, and approves a $500 grant. Bloomerang Fundraising records the $500 gift immediately and marks it as received when the sponsor's payment arrives.

DAFpay is available on Bloomerang Fundraising donation forms, including for customers who also use Bloomerang CRM. It is enabled on your forms by default and works with every payment processor available in Bloomerang Fundraising, including Bloomerang Payments, Worldpay, and third-party processors.

Why Should I Use DAFpay?

Use DAFpay to:

  • Capture gifts from donors who give through a donor-advised fund.

  • Keep DAF donors on your form instead of sending them to their sponsor's website.

  • Record DAF gifts with your other donations without manual data entry.

When you accept gifts with DAFpay, you:

  • Raise more from DAF donors: Donors can give from their fund in the same checkout they already use, so fewer DAF gifts are lost.

  • Save time on data entry: Each DAFpay gift is recorded in Bloomerang Fundraising automatically with the donor's name, the DAF sponsor, and the gift amount.

How Does It Work?

For forms supporting DAFpay, a DAFpay gift moves through the stages in the next sections. If a donor's form or settings don't support DAFpay, the DAFpay button doesn't appear on the form.

1. The Donor Gives

On your form, the donor:

  1. Enters their gift and contact details

  2. Selects DAFpay

  3. Signs in to their DAF sponsor in a window that opens on the form

  4. Approves the grant

The gift is submitted automatically, and the donor sees your confirmation page.

2. The Gift is Pending

After the donor gives using DAFpay, Bloomerang Fundraising records the gift right away with an Offline status and a DAFpay payment method. The money hasn't arrived yet.

3. The Sponsor Sends the Grant

The DAF sponsor pays your organization by ACH or by check, either directly or through Chariot. DAF grants usually arrive within a few days to a few weeks, depending on the sponsor.

4. The Gift is Accepted

When Chariot confirms that your organization received the grant, the gift's status changes to Accepted. For customers who also use Bloomerang CRM, the gift syncs to Bloomerang CRM at this point. To learn how to track each stage, read Track and Reconcile DAFpay Gifts.

Note: Not all DAF sponsors are integrated with Chariot, but the list continues to grow. If a sponsor is not integrated, the donor is directed back to select a different payment method or contact their sponsor directly.

Where DAFpay Is Available

DAFpay is available for:

  • One-time gifts on Bloomerang Fundraising donation forms, including embedded forms.

  • Donation forms on every payment processor available in Bloomerang Fundraising.

DAFpay is not available for:

  • Express Donate

  • Recurring gifts

  • Peer-to-peer campaigns, events, and auctions

  • Invoice payments

  • Forms that don't use U.S. dollars

Bloomerang will continue to expand DAFpay to be available on more forms.

Features DAFpay Doesn't Support Yet

These features don't apply to DAFpay gifts:

  • Employer matching gifts: A DAFpay gift isn't registered with Double the Donation or HEPdata, even if the donor fills in employer matching details.

  • Restrictions passed to the sponsor: The restriction a donor selects is recorded on the transaction in Bloomerang Fundraising, but it isn't sent to Chariot or the DAF sponsor. The sponsor's grant paperwork doesn't show the restriction. Rely on the restriction recorded on the transaction in Bloomerang Fundraising.

  • Saved payment methods: Donors can't save DAFpay as a payment method.

  • Refunds: You can't refund a DAFpay gift from Bloomerang Fundraising after you receive the grant. If a donor wants to cancel a grant request, they must contact the sponsor directly.

  • Form maximum donation amount: A DAFpay gift can exceed the maximum amount you set on the form when GiftAssist is added or when the donor changes the amount in the DAFpay payment confirmation window. The minimum amount still applies.

DAFpay and Other Donation Settings

Two donation settings behave differently for forms with DAFpay enabled:

  • Matching Gifts: Employer matching doesn't apply to DAFpay gifts. If a donor fills in employer matching details and then pays with DAFpay, the gift isn't registered with Double the Donation or HEPdata. To learn more, read Donation Forms | About DAFpay.

  • Minimum and Maximum Donations: The maximum amount doesn't apply to DAFpay gifts. A DAFpay gift can exceed the maximum when GiftAssist is added or when the donor changes the amount in the DAFpay window. The minimum still applies.

How Much Does DAFpay Cost?

There is no package cost for DAFpay. Each DAFpay gift carries a processing fee of 4.85%. Chariot collects the fee, so DAFpay fees don't appear on your Bloomerang fee statements.

DAF sponsors send grants in whole dollars, so the total submitted to the sponsor is always rounded down to the nearest whole dollar. To learn how fees, GiftAssist, and rounding work together, read Track and Reconcile DAFpay Gifts.

How Do I Get Started?

DAFpay is already on for your donation forms. To review the setting, check its connection status, or turn it off for a form, read Donation Forms | Manage DAFpay.

Tip: To make DAFpay gifts easier to receive and track, we recommend you claim your Chariot account. With an account, you can:

  • Receive grants directly from the DAF sponsor instead of through the DAFpay Network.

  • Receive grants by ACH when the sponsor supports it and you’ve set up ACH in Chariot.

  • View and manage your DAFpay grants in Chariot.

  • Mark check grants as received, helping Bloomerang update the gift to Accepted and sync it to your CRM, based on your sync settings.
