Create and Manage Households

Create a household to understand how a family contributes to your organization as a single giving unit.

This article explains how to create and manage households and household members. To understand what households are, how they work, and best practices, read About Relationships and Households.

Create Households

To create households, you can:

  • (Recommended) Create a new constituent and household at the same time, which saves you time.

  • Create a household after you create constituents.

Create a Constituent and Household at the Same Time

To create a constituent and household at the same time:

  1. Click Constituents.

  2. Click Add Constituent.

  3. Click Individual.

  4. Enter the required constituent information.
    For detailed instructions about how to create constituents, read Create Constituents.

  5. Click Add to Household.

  6. Select Create New Household.

  7. Enter a Household Name. The other household name fields use this name.

  8. (Optional) Edit any of the household name fields.

  9. Click Save. Bloomerang CRM creates the household and adds the new constituent to it.

  10. If you don’t need to create another household member, click Save As and select Go to Constituent Profile or Go to Household.

  11. To quickly add another household member:

    1. Click Save As.

    2. Select Create Another Constituent.

    3. Click Individual.

    4. Enter the required constituent information.

    5. Click Add to Household.

    6. Select Add to Existing Household.

    7. Search for the household you just added and select it.

    8. Click Save.

    9. Click Save As and select an option: Create Another Constituent, Go to the Constituent Profile, or Go to Household.

Create a Household After You Create Constituents

To create a household after you create constituents:

  1. Search for and select an existing constituent who will be Head of Household.

  2. Click the Relationships tab.

  3. Click Add to Household.

  4. Select Create New Household.

  5. Enter a Household Name. The other household name fields use this name.

  6. (Optional) Edit any of the household name fields.

  7. Click Save. The new household appears on the Relationships page.

  8. To view or edit the household, click it.

Add Household Members

To add household members to an existing household, you can:

To add a household member from a household account:

  1. Open the household account.

  2. Click the Relationships tab.

  3. Click Add to Household.

  4. Click Existing Constituent or New Constituent.

  5. If you selected Existing Constituent:

    1. Search for the constituent.

    2. Click the constituent’s name.

    3. Click Save.

  6. If you selected New Constituent:

    1. Create the constituent. To save you time, the last name and address are the same as the Head of Household’s last name and address. You can edit these and other fields.

    2. Click Save And.

    3. Select Create Another Constituent, Go To Constituent Profile, or Go To Household.

To add a household member from a constituent account:

  1. Open the constituent's account.

  2. Click the Relationships tab.

  3. Click Add to Household.

  4. Click Add to Existing Household.

  5. Search for the correct household.

  6. Click the household.

  7. Click Save. This constituent is now a member of the household. The household name appears in the constituent’s account header and on the Relationships tab.

Remove Household Members

To remove a constituent from a household:

  1. Open the household or constituent account.

  2. Click the Relationships tab.

  3. In the household's section, click the down arrow next to the constituent's name.

  4. Click Leave Household.

  5. To confirm, click Yes.

Change the Head of Household

To change which constituent is the head of household:

  1. Open the household or constituent account.

  2. Click the Relationships tab.

  3. In the household section, click the down arrow next to the constituent you want to use.

  4. Click Make Head of Household.

  5. To confirm, click Yes.

Edit Household Name Information

Household name information includes the household name, sort name, informal name, formal name, envelope name, and recognition name.

To edit the household name information:

  1. In the constituent search bar, search for the household.

  2. To open the household, click the household name.

  3. Click the Profile tab.

  4. Click Edit.

  5. Enter your changes and click Save.

Delete Households

Households include only data from household member accounts. This means you can delete a household without affecting the household member accounts. After you delete a household, the household member accounts and data remain.

To delete a household:

  1. In the constituent search bar, search for the household.

  2. Click the household name to open the household.

  3. Click the Profile tab.

  4. Click Edit.

  5. Click Delete.

  6. To confirm, click Yes.

Tip: Removing all the household members from the household also deletes the household.
