How Do I Email Only the Head of Household?

Updated this week

When you create an email in Bloomerang CRM, you can change the filter settings so only the Head of Household receives your mass email.

How It Works

When you create a constituent-type email, change the filter type to Household.

After you do this:

  • Bloomerang CRM emails only the Head of Household.

  • If the Head of Household doesn’t have an email address, Bloomerang CRM sends the email to another household member.

  • If the Head of Household doesn’t match the filters you select, Bloomerang CRM still emails only the Head of Household. For example, you select filters that match Chris (household member) but not Avery (Head of Household). Bloomerang CRM sends the email to only Avery.

  • Bloomerang CRM uses only the Head of Household’s email interests. The Head of Household must be subscribed to an email interest selected for your email message.

  • If you include filters that add household members who are subscribed, but the Head of Household isn’t subscribed, Bloomerang CRM doesn’t email the Head of Household (or the subscribed household members).

Note: If you select the Constituents filter type instead of Households, Bloomerang CRM honors the email interests for each individual household member. For example, if the Head of Household is opted out of all marketing emails, but a household member is opted in, that household member receives the marketing email.

Which Merge Fields Appear in the Email?

If you change the email filter type to Household:

  • The email uses household-type merge fields where relevant.
For example, if you add the Informal Name merge field in the message body, the email uses the informal name of the household. The Household Name appears in the To line of the email.

  • Calculated fields, such as Lifetime Raised and others, show household data.

  • Custom merge fields show Head of Household data.

  • The email uses the Head of Household’s merge fields for non-household merge fields.
For example, if you add the Birthdate merge field, the email uses the Head of Household’s birthdate.

Who Appears in the Filtered List?

If you change the email filter type to Household, these constituents appear in the filtered list:

  • Households rather than individual household members

  • Constituents who are not household members

To include only households in the filtered list, include the Is In a Household filter.

Keep in mind that the complete recipient list appears only after you select Save and Preview. The complete recipient list skips constituents who aren’t subscribed or who have a bad email address.

How Do Communication Restrictions Affect Households?

You can filter by household communication restrictions, which are Do Not Call, Do Not Mail, and Do Not Solicit.

If you filter by communication restrictions, households are included or excluded when all members of the household meet the criteria. For example, if you exclude Communication Restriction is Do Not Mail, the household is excluded if all household members have a Do Not Mail restriction.
