Set or Edit the Automation Priority

Updated this week

If you have multiple donation automations for the same type of donation, you must set a priority for those automations. Priority is important because constituents can enter only one donation automation for a payment. Priority makes sure that constituents enter the automation you intend them to. Donation priority applies only to donation automations, which appear in the Donations section of your Automations list.

This article explains how to manually set or edit the priority for donation automations that use the same entry source. Keep in mind that entry sources also have built-in priority rules.

How It Works

If you have multiple automations that use the same donation entry source:

  • You must set a priority when you publish a new automation for that entry source.

  • You can edit the priority of running and paused automations. These edits apply only to future participants. If you edit the priority, current participants remain within their current automation.

Constituents who qualify to enter multiple donation automations enter only the automation with the higher priority.

For example, you have an automation named Next One-Time Donations. You create an additional automation named Next One-Time Donations (Annual Gala), which filters for donations associated with your gala campaign. You edit the prioritization so Next One-Time Donations (Annual Gala) is prioritized highest. Constituents who qualify to enter both automations enter only the gala automation and get personalized communications about your gala.

After completing the higher-priority automation, constituents don’t enter a lower-priority automation that they qualified for while within the higher-priority automation.

If a transaction event causes constituents to exit a donation automation before completing it, they can immediately enter another automation for that same entry source if they qualify to do so.
